Chapter 19

Trinn waited for the limousine to move from the front of the Radisson Blu Edwardian hotel, then walked forward slowly, staying near the planter boxes full of short evergreen bushes. Her ankle was swollen and sore, but the pain was manageable. When she saw Darby, she coughed a few times until he looked her way. He quickly spoke with the other bellman, grabbed a cigarette, and disappeared into the hotel.

Trinn backtracked to the alley, walking quickly to the hotel’s loading dock. Darby stood nearby, struggling to light his cigarette.

“I thought you quit smoking.” She took the young man’s lighter from his shaking hand, flicking it. A small yellow flame jumped upward. Trinn held it under the tip of the cigarette.

Darby took a deep drag and blew the smoke away from her. “I quit, alright. But watching the news has got me buggered. You can’t be here, Jaden. I can’t be seen with you.”

She glanced back and forth, viewing the area. “Then why’d you come back here?”

“I thought I owed it to you to tell you proper.” Darby hunched his shoulders against the cold. “Being involved with terrorists who’ve bombed the port of London is a bit different from letting a friend pluck an empty room to snoop on visiting dignitaries playing a round of golf at Highgate. This—”

“Didn’t I always pay you well for that?”

“This is different.” He shook his head, waving his hands. “You’ve paid right well—I’m not ungrateful. But the bleedin’ police are scouring the streets for you. You’re all over the telly—and terrorism, that’s big-time prison over here.”

“I know.” She winced, looking away. “I’m sorry to put you on the spot.”

“You need to go. I’m sorry.” He jammed the cigarette to his lips, his fingers trembling. “I can see you’re in a spot, but they’ll put me away for twenty years for helping a terrorist. They locked up them London Bridge guys for that long.”

“Come on. Let me use a room so I can shower and change clothes. I have a valise in the baggage check. I’ll be gone in an hour.”

“Jaden . . .”

“At least let me get the bag. It’s mine. I don’t have the tag on me, but it’s a red Louis Vuitton.”

“I can’t help you. And you can’t be seen around the hotel, for your own good. It’s too risky.” He dropped the cigarette onto the pavement and ground it under his toe. “Get going before you’re spotted and land yourself in jail.”

Trinn swallowed hard. “Darby, please.”

He walked away.

“Twenty thousand,” she said.

Darby stopped, lowering his head.

Trinn shifted on her feet. “I’ll give you twenty thousand American dollars if you get my bag and sneak me into a room. Cash.”

He turned, his face falling. “That’s the price of my life to you now?” He pursed his lips. “Can’t do it, mate. Keep your head down and watch you don’t get pinched by any of the security cameras around here.” He walked up the ramp and went into the loading dock doors.

Trinn dragged her hands through her hair, cursing as she rushed back to the alley.
